The 1942 Bing Crosby
movie “Holiday Inn,” renowned for its Irving
Berlin score that introduced “White Christmas,”
has the crooner musing in song about Thanksgiving.
While the film preceded by decades the abundance
and hectic lifestyle we experience today, the
words of the song feel timeless. They make a
thought-provoking meditation for Thanksgiving Day;
a focus on how simple our needs, versus our wants,
really are.
I've Got Plenty
To Be Thankful For
1. I've got plenty to be thankful for
I haven't got
A great big yacht
To sail from shore to shore
Still I've got plenty to be thankful for
2. I've got
plenty to be thankful for
No private car
No caviar
No carpet on my floor
Still I've got plenty to be thankful for
3. I've got
eyes to see with
Ears to hear with
Arms to hug with
Lips to kiss with
Someone to adore
4. How could
anybody ask for more?
My needs are small
I buy them all
At the five and ten cent store
Oh, I've got plenty to be thankful for
This Sunday we bring
to the altar our pledges from our “treasure,” in
thanksgiving for God’s gracious goodness showered
upon us. Thursday we pause for Thanksgiving Day.
Before beginning the Thanksgiving meal, pray with
your family the General Thanksgiving found on page
836 of your “Book of Common Prayer.” In the midst
of the whirl of the challenges of this world, it
is easy to forget how blessed we truly are. |
